Two Fugues for String Quartet [PDF instant download]
Two of Fanny Hensel’s little-known keyboard fugues, arranged for string quartet by Henselpushers.
The Fugata (H193) dates from 1827 during Hensel’s neo-baroque period, while she and her brother Felix were deeply immersed in J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion leading up to the famous Bach revival of 1829. It is a fascinating double fugue with contrasting subjects and clear Bachian inspiration.
The Fuga (H273) was written about seven years later, and has some similarities to the finale of Beethoven’s piano sonata op. 110. In its string arrangement, the subject is reminiscent of another work: Robert Schumann’s piano quintet op. 44, which was composed 8 years after Hensel’s fugue.
