Two Fugues for String Quartet [PDF instant download]
Two of Fanny Hensel’s little-known keyboard fugues, arranged for string quartet by Henselpushers.
The Fugata (H193) [listen here] dates from 1827 during Hensel’s neo-baroque period, while she and her brother Felix were deeply immersed in J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion leading up to the famous Bach revival of 1829. It is a fascinating double fugue with contrasting subjects and clear Bachian inspiration.
The Fuga (H273) [listen here] was written about seven years later, and has some similarities to the finale of Beethoven’s piano sonata op. 110. In its string arrangement, the subject is reminiscent of another work: Robert Schumann’s piano quintet op. 44, which was composed 8 years after Hensel’s fugue.
