Recording Directory

A collaborative project to find recordings of all Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s compositions

This spreadsheet lists all known compositions by Fanny Hensel, and for each extant piece we are trying to link a free audio or video recording of that work.

Notes on the directory:

  • Works with hot pink cells in the last column need links. Light pink links can be replaced if a better* version is found. If there's already a recording linked in a gray cell, that recording won’t be replaced—the goal here is finding recordings of as many different Hensel works as possible, not favoring one recording over another for those works which have been recorded many times.

*Preference is given to recordings with Hensel’s original instrumentation. For example, if there is no recording of the original arrangement of a work for voice/piano, but there's an arrangement for voice/harp, the voice/harp arrangement can be linked until a voice/piano recording is found.

*Preference is given to live/acoustic recordings, but MIDI/computer-generated recordings of works are acceptable until a live/acoustic recording is found.

  • Links must be on YouTube or another free listening platform. Recordings on platforms/apps which require paid subscriptions are not linked.

  • Beware duplicate titles of compositions! There are several works with the same or similar titles; for example, Hensel wrote NINE lieder titled "Sehnsucht". Compare the recording to the score linked in the “Manuscript link” column to ensure you're connecting the right piece (use the H or H-U number).

Several compositions are still missing recording links. This is where you can help! There are two ways to contribute:

  • Find existing recordings of missing works online

  • Make your own recordings of missing works

If you want to add a recording to the spreadsheet:

  1. Check the spreadsheet to confirm that the "recording link" cell for the composition is pink. If the cell is hot pink and has no text, any arrangement of the work will be accepted. If the cell is light pink and has an existing link, only improved recordings of the work (see notes above) will be accepted.

  2. Compare the recording to the score (either the PDF or the manuscript) to confirm it's the right one. Be wary of different works with the same title!

  3. Fill out this form to submit the link for inclusion in the spreadsheet. If all checks out, the link will be added to the spreadsheet.
