Strahlende Ostsee

This is one of seven a cappella duets by Fanny Hensel set to text by August Hermann Niemeyer. This work was written in summer 1839 when Fanny was with her sister Rebecca at a resort on the Baltic sea. Rebecca had been unwell and as a treatment for her illness, the sisters bathed in the sea every day and sang duets like this one.

Strahlende Ostsee mit wogender Flut,
Grünende Buchen und fröhlicher Mut,
Freundliche Dörfer in ländlicher Ruh,
Und in der Brust die Empfindung dazu.

Hört ihr der Wogen melodischen Klang?
Ernst und erhaben, ein himmlischer Sang.
Menschenlaut, juble durch Wogen und Wind.
Gott hat so gerne sein dankbares Kind.
