H246

Sonata in E-flat Major (unfinished)

In fall 1829, in the two months after her wedding and before her brother Felix returned from his 8-month trip to Britain, Fanny Hensel composed three movements of a piano sonata in E-flat major. She never finished this work, but the first two movements will sound familiar if you know her string quartet (H277); five years after drafting the sonata, she repurposed the first two movements into her only string quartet.

This edition by Henselpushers appears to be the first publication of this nearly 200 year old work. The third movement in particular is a beautiful Largo molto with a rich and harmonically ambiguous opening section that transitions into an exultant chorale-like transcription similar to those in Das Jahr a decade later.
