H44

Sonatensatz: Allegro assai moderato in E Major

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel wrote this work in early 1822, immediately after writing her first piano sonata in F Major, which has since been lost. She labeled this work “first movement of a sonata,” but seems never to have completed it. Over the next couple years she continued occasionally to work in the piano sonata genre, finishing her next complete sonata (H128) in 1824.
