Ich stand gelehnet an den Mast

This is the first of seven a cappella duets by Fanny Hensel. This work was written in 1835, set to text by Mendelssohn family friend Heinrich Heine. The duet was probably written for the Woringen siblings, whose family Fanny and her husband stayed with during their visit to see Felix direct the Lower Rhine Music Festival in Düsseldorf that year.

Ich stand gelehnet an den Mast,

Und zählte jede Welle.

Ade mein schönes Vaterland,

Mein Schiff, das segelt schnelle!

Ich fuhr bei Liebchens Haus vorbei
